Today I’m here with home inspector Joey Donofrio to share a quick tip to help you during the cold months: sidewalk salt sucks. Putting salt on the sidewalk is a great way to melt the snow and ice, but it unfortunately also has the effect of eating away at your concrete. During their home inspections, many homeowners seem shocked to learn that salt can do that. If you don’t believe it, think about how all those potholes form after cities salt their roads.
Fortunately, there are a few alternatives to salt that will help keep your walkways clear of ice and snow but won’t destroy your concrete, such as more frequent shoveling—do one full sweep for every couple inches of snowfall. You can also purchase non-salt de-icers from most home goods stores. I’ve even tried kitty litter—it’s messy, but it’s better than having to replace the concrete after salt erosion.
